"Welcome to Gotham" bewegt viele Touristen zu einem Foto.

Gotham ist ein Ort in Nottinghamshire in England 7 km südlich von Nottingham. Die Kirche St. Lawrence stammt aus dem 12. Jahrhundert.

Der Ort ist in den Geschichten der Wise Men of Gotham das englische Äquivalent zu Schilda. Es wird angeblich bereits in einer Handschrift des 13. Jahrhundert als Gotyam erwähnt. Bekannt ist die Siedlung vor allem durch den Kinderreim:
Three wise men of Gotham
 They went to sea in a bowl
 And if the bowl had been stronger
 My song would have been longer.

Die Bewohner von Gotham bauten unter anderem einen Zaun, um den Kuckuck festzuhalten und so einen ewigen Sommer zu bekommen.

Washington Irving übertrug 1807 in dem Buch Salmagundi den Namen Gotham von den Märchen auf New York City. Diesen heute nicht mehr gebräuchlichen Spitznamen verwendete Bob Kane für seine Batman-Comics als Gotham City.
