Das Gonfanon (Von: lat. gonfalone, port. gonfalào, sp. confalon, frz. gonfalon, fränk. gundfano (Kampffahne)) bezeichnet eine rechteckige Fahnen- oder Bannerart des Mittelalters, die von einem vertikalen Stab weht und die am wehenden Ende aus mehreren Streifen oder Bändern besteht. Es wurde vor allem von italienischen Republiken sowie in religiösen Prozessionen benutzt. Sie dienten aber auch als Kampffahnen des Rittertums, aus denen sich dann die Ritterstandarten entwickelten (siehe Abbildung).

In Italien wird das Gonfanon versehentlich auch manchmal "Ombrellino" genannt. Das Missverständnis entstand daraus, dass auf päpstlichen Gonfanones manchmal Ombrellino dargestellt waren.
