Gofannon

Govannon ( auch Gofannon) ist eine walisische Sagengestalt und eine Figur aus den Vier Zweigen des Mabinogi.

Mythologie

In der Sage von Kilhwch und Olwen wird Govannon als ein Sohn der Danu bezeichnet der mit seinem Bruder Amaethon von Arthur davon überzeugt werden muss für den Riesen Yspadadden ein bestimmtes Feld zu Roden.

In den walisischen Triaden wird er als Mörder bezeichnet, der seinen Neffen Pryderi mit einem der "drei verhängnisvollsten Schläge Brittanniens" tötete.

Deutung

Govannon wird oft als Überrest einer altkeltischen Gottheit gedeutet.Er entspricht dem Goibniu der irischen Sage und der Gestalt des Gavida von der Isle of Man. Der Name leitet sich vom keltischen "Gobanonos" (Großer Schmied) ab. Von den Festlandkelten ist ein Spätantiker Gott namens Gobanos inschriftlich überliefert der wahescheinlich mit der Figur des Govannon zusammenhängt.
