Garry Winogrand

Garry Winogrand (* 14. Januar 1928 in New York; † 19. März 1984 in Tijuana, Mexiko) war ein US-amerikanischer Fotograf.

Leben

Nachdem Winogrand zunächst Malerei am City College in New York studierte, wandte er sich Anfang der 50er-Jahre ganz der Fotografie zu. Die Werke American Photographs von Walker Evans und The Americans von Robert Frank beeinflussten ihn stark.

Winogrand ist hauptsächlich als Vertreter der street photography bekannt. Obwohl Fotografen vor ihm, wie André Kertész und Henri Cartier-Bresson auf der Straße fotografierten, so muss doch Winogrand als der eigentliche Urheber dieses Genres angesehen werden.

Er war ein manischer Fotograf. Winogrand konnte keine Straße entlanggehen, ohne einen Film zu belichten. Jedoch fotografierte er keineswegs wahllos, sondern komponierte seine Bilder äußerst präzise. Nach seinem Tod hinterließ er nicht weniger als 2500 belichtete, jedoch unentwickelte Filme. Zahlreiche weitere Filme waren zwar entwickelt, jedoch gänzlich uneditiert.
