Der Verein spielt seit der Saison 1999/2000 in der 2. portugiesischen Liga, der Liga de Honra (Ehrenliga), wurde aber nach der Saison 2006/07 drittklassig. In der 1. Liga spielte Chaves zuletzt von 1995 bis 1999. 2009 schafften sie den erneuten Aufstieg in die 2. portugiesischen Fußballliga (Liga de Honra), dem der direkte sportliche Abstieg in die dritthöchste Spielklasse folgte.
