Freshlyground (dt. frisch gemahlen) ist eine südafrikanische Band, die sich 2002 in Kapstadt gründete. Die Bandmitglieder stammen aus Südafrika, Mosambik und Simbabwe. Ihre Musik beinhaltet Elemente afrikanischer Musik wie beispielsweise Kwela, Blues, Jazz und Independent. Leadsängerin ist Zolani Mahola. Genau diese Vielfalt und der Fokus auf afrikanische Traditionen, so die Band in einem Interview, ermöglichte den Aufstieg von Freshlyground als erfolgreiches Musik-Exportprodukt Südafrikas.[2]

2010 steuerte die Gruppe zusammen mit Shakira den offiziellen Song zur Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2010 Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) bei.[3]. Dieser stammt aus dem Lied „Zangalewa“ von der kamerunischen Band Golden Sounds, das bereits 1986 veröffentlicht wurde. [4]
