Francesco Vettori

Francesco Vettori (* 1474 in Florenz; † 1539 ebenda) war ein florentinischer Staatsmann.

Leben

Vettori stieg nach der Vertreibung der Medici (1494) in die Regierung auf und wurde 1503 Mitglied des Regierungsrats. 1507 nahm er als Gesandter am Reichstag von Konstanz teil. 1512 wechselte er das politische Lager und war maßgeblich am Sturz Piero Soderini beteiligt; danach schloss er sich den heimkehrenden Medici an. Vettori war ein Freund Niccolò Machiavellis, mit dem er in Briefwechsel stand. 1513 konnte Vettori als Gesandter bei Papst Leo X. die Befreiung des inhaftierten Machiavelli bewirken. 1515-18 war Vettori Gesandter in Frankreich und 1529 abermals Botschafter in Rom. Unter seinen Schriften findet sich eine kurze Geschichte Italiens der Jahre 1511−27.
