First fleet

Als First Fleet wird die Flotte von Schiffen bezeichnet, die am 13. Mai 1787 Portsmouth in England verließ, um Australien zu besiedeln. An Bord waren insgesamt 756 Strafgefangene und 550 Besatzungsmitglieder[1]. Befehlshaber der Flotte von 11 Schiffen war Kapitän z.S. Arthur Phillip.

Reise

Am 26. Januar 1788 (heute als Australia Day gefeiert) kam die Flotte nach einer Fahrt über Teneriffa, Rio de Janeiro und dem Kap Horn in Sydney Cove (kleine Bucht des Port Jackson) an, wo eine erste Siedlung aufgebaut wurde. Die neue Ansiedlung wurde Sydney genannt, zu Ehren des damaligen englischen Innenministers Lord Sydney. Die Flotte segelte weiter nach Norfolk Island, wo eine weitere Siedlung gegründet wurde.

Versorgungsschiffe

Modelle aller Schiffe sind im Museum of Sydney ausgestellt.

Neun heute in Dienst stehende Hafenfähren in Sydney sind nach Schiffen der First Fleet benannt (nicht verwendet werden derzeit Lady Penrhyn und Prince Of Wales).
