Gabriele Falloppio (auch Fallopio; * 1523 in Modena; † 9. Oktober 1562 in Padua) war ein italienischer Anatom und Chirurg. Besser bekannt ist er unter seinem lateinischen Namen Fallopius. Er gilt als Mitbegründer der modernen Anatomie und war einer der wichtigsten Ärzte des 16. Jahrhunderts.

Leben

Falloppio studierte in Ferrara, wo er 1552 den Doktortitel erhielt. Von 1548 bis 1551 war er Dozent für Anatomie in Pisa, danach lehrte er Chirurgie und Pharmazie in Padua. Mit zahlreichen selbst durchgeführten Sektionen trug er zur Explosion des anatomischen Wissens im 16. Jahrhundert bei. Besonders detaillierte Beschreibungen steuerte er zum Bau des –Gehörorgans bei. Zudem setzte er neue Akzente in der Beschreibung des Eileiters, der deshalb auch als Fallopp’sche Tube oder Tuba uterina (Fallopii) – im englischen Sprachraum: Fallopian tube – bezeichnet wird.

Als erste wissenschaftlich sichere Erwähnung der oft schamhaft verschwiegenen Syphilis gilt sein Buch De morbo Gallico („Über die französische Krankheit“). Er empfahl mit Medikamenten und anorganischen Salzen getränkte Leinensäckchen gegen die sich ausbreitende (möglicherweise aus dem neu entdeckten Amerika eingeschleppte) Syphilis. Falloppio wird daher vielfach für den Erfinder des Kondoms gehalten.
