Airstream Inc. ist ein US-amerikanischer Hersteller von Großraumwohnwagen.

Geschichte

In den 1930er Jahren hatte Wally Byam die Idee zu einem geräumigen Wohnwagen, der leicht genug sein sollte, dass er von jedem Standard-Pkw gezogen werden konnte. Er gründete die Airstream Manufacturing Company und baute einen Prototyp. Die Außenhülle war aus Gewichtsgründen komplett aus unlackiertem Aluminium gefertigt, was bei den späteren Serienmodellen beibehalten wurde. Wegen dieser silbrig-metallischen Optik bekamen die Wohnwagen die Beinamen „silver rocket“ oder „Silberling“. Einige Modelle wurden bis in die 1960er Jahre nahezu unverändert gebaut.

2006 feierte Airstream sein 75jähriges Jubiläum und begann, speziell für Europa entwickelte Produkte zu fertigen. Diese verfügen über ein 230 Volt-Netz; Chassis, Achsen und Zugdeichsel werden in Deutschland hergestellt. Der Wagen ist ca. 500 Kilogramm leichter als die US-Version.

Seit 2010 bietet Airstream auch offizielle Imbissfahrzeuge in Europa an. Diese basieren auf den Europamodellen des Airstream 534 und Airstream 684. Im Gegensatz zu den umgebauten Versionen herkömmlicher US Airstreams sind diese Fahrzeuge von Grund auf als Verkaufsfahrzeuge geplant. Diese wurden vom Deutschen Importeur Roka Werk - Airstream Germany als Airstream Diner auf der Internorga 2010 vorgestellt.
