Die Airman Battle Uniform, kurz ABU, ist der derzeitige Kampfanzug der US Air Force. Die Uniform ist zurzeit in der Truppeneinführungsphase und soll bis zum Jahr 2011 den alten Kampfanzug komplett ersetzen. Die ABU wurde im Rahmen der streitkräfteweiten Weiterentwicklung der Kampfanzüge entwickelt.
Geschichte
Der erste Prototyp der ABU wurde im Sommer 2003 vorgestellt.[1] Dieser erste Prototyp bestanden aus Hosen, bestickten Unterhemden und einer Bluse. Das Tarnmuster waren blaue, nicht digitale Tigerstreifen.
Nach einer Testphase, in der die Uniform von Air-Force-Personal getragen wurde, überarbeitete man das Tarnmuster sowie die Farbpalette. Das neue digitale Tigerstreifenmuster nutzte nun eine weniger blau-hervorstechende Farbpalette.[2] Im Oktober 2007 hat die US Air Force begonnen, die ABU an Airmen in der Grundausbildung auszugeben, und seit dem Juni 2008 steht die Uniform für den Rest der Truppe zur Verfügung.
Die ABU soll in 236 verschiedenen Größen, männlich und weiblich, verfügbar sein. Die Anschaffungskosten pro Uniform belaufen sich auf rund 81 US-Dollar.
