Die Erie Railroad Company war eine der ältesten Eisenbahngesellschaften der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Die Anfänge gehen zurück bis zum Jahre 1832. Gebaut wurde sie, um die kürzeste Verbindung zwischen New York und dem Eriesee und damit den übrigen großen Seen herzustellen. Sie war wirtschaftlich erfolgreich und konnte sich westwärts bis Cleveland und Chicago ausdehnen.

Die Strecke wurde zuerst in Breitspur von 1829 mm (6 Fuß) gebaut und erhielt später bis 1878 eine dritte Schiene, um sie für die anderen, regelspurigen Bahnen benutzbar zu machen. Bis 1885 wurde die Strecke auf Regelspur von 1435 mm umgebaut.

Die Bahn war in die größten Eisenbahnspekulationen 1872 von Daniel Drew, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jim Fisk und Jay Gould verwickelt.

Im Jahre 1960 verschmolz das Unternehmen mit der Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad zur Erie Lackawanna Railroad. 1976 wurde sie Teil der Conrail.
