Sir Edward Burnett Tylor (* 2. Oktober 1832 in London; † 2. Januar 1917 in Wellington, Somerset) war ein britischer Anthropologe, der mit seinem Werk Primitive Culture (1871) als der Begründer der Kulturanthropologie angesehen werden kann.

1896 wurde er als Begründer nach Oxford berufen. Er befasste sich vor allem mit dem Studium der Mythologie, der Magie und der Religion der Primitiven in einer evolutionistischen Sicht.

Tylor war der erste Wissenschaftler, der die matriarchale Gesellschaftsform beschrieb (1896). Er stützte seine Studien auf die Veröffentlichung (1871) eines holländischen Kolonialbeamten über die Minangkabau in Westsumatra.

Er führte Feldforschungen in Mexiko durch und prägte den Begriff des Survivals ("Überlebsel"). Dieser Begriff bezeichnet Fragmente alter Traditionen, die sich über die Geschichte hin erhalten haben. Anhand ihrer könnte, so meinte Tylor, die Geschichte der Kultur rekonstruiert werden.

Für Tylor war der Vergleich der Maßstab für das Feststellen einer Kulturentwicklung; er entwarf von dieser Kulturentwicklung ein dynamisches Bild:

  • Fortschritt
  • Verfall
  • Überleben
  • Umgestaltung

Nach Tylor kann sich eine Kultur zu jedem Zeitpunkt theoretisch in drei Richtungen weiterentwickeln:

  • Fortschritt
  • seitliches Abirren
  • Rückschritt
