Earl of Warwick

Earl of Warwick (ausgesprochen "Worrick") ist ein Adelstitel, der in der britischen Geschichte viermal vergeben wurde und einen der angesehensten Titel Großbritanniens darstellt.

Erste Verleihung (1088)

Die mittelalterliche Earlswürde wurde im Jahr 1088 für Henry de Beaumont errichtet, den jüngeren Sohn von Roger de Beaumont und Bruder von Robert de Beaumont, 1. Earl of Leicester. Da das Lehen auch in weiblicher Linie erblich war, kam die Earlswürde in den folgenden Jahrhunderten in den Besitz mehrerer Familien. Die Earlswürde war traditionell mit Warwick Castle verbunden, und, als der 11. Earl die unveräußerliche Vererblichkeit der Burg auf seine männlichen Nachkommen beschränkte, beabsichtigte er damit vermutlich das Gleiche mit der Earlswürde selbst. Mit dem Hochverratsprozess gegen Edward Plantagenet, 17. Earl of Warwick, verfiel der Titel.

Zweite Verleihung (1547)

Der nächste Titelträger war der mächtige Politiker und Militär John Dudley. Er wurde 1543 zum Viscount Lisle ernannt und 1547 dann zum Earl of Warwick in der Peerage of England. 1551 schließlich wurde er zum Duke of Northumberland gemacht. Seine Hinrichtung wegen Hochverrats zwei Jahre später ließ die Verleihung des ersten und dritten Titels verfallen, nicht jedoch die des Earl of Warwick, so dass Dudleys ältester Sohn John und danach dessen Bruder Ambrose die Nachfolge antreten konnten. Mit dessen Tod erlosch der Titel 1590.

Dritte Verleihung (1618)

Die Familie Rich stammt von Richard Rich ab, einem reichen Kaufmann, der 1441 Sheriff der City of London war. Sein Urenkel Sir Richard Rich war ein bekannter Jurist und Politiker, er wurde 1547 als Baron Rich, of Leez, in die Peerage of England aufgenommen. Sein Sohn, der 2. Baron, war der erste Ehemann von Catherine Knyvet. Robert Rich, 3. Baron Rich, Sohn des 2. Barons, wurde 1618 zum Earl of Warwick in der Peerage of England ernannt, obwohl die Familie nicht im Besitz von Warwick Castle war (siehe unten). Sein zweiter Sohn, Hon. Henry Rich wurde 1623 Baron Kensington und 1624 Earl of Holland. Der 3. Earl of Warwick, Enkel des 1. Earl, und dessen Bruder, der 4. Earl, starben ohne Nachkommen, wodurch Robert Rich, 2. Earl of Holland, auch der 5. Earl of Warwick wurde. Die Familie starb 1759 mit dem 8. Earl of Warwick aus.

Vierte Verleihung (1759)

1746 wurde Francis Greville, 8. Baron Willoughby de Broke, zum Earl Brooke, of Warwick Castle, in der Peerage of Great Britain ernannt. Als das Earldom Warwick 1759 erlosch, wurde er im November des gleichen Jahres zum Earl of Warwick in der Peerage of Great Britain ernannt, so dass die Earlswürde und Warwick Castle nunmehr wieder in einer Hand waren. Dessen Nachkommen halten Titel und Burg noch heute.
