Earl of Surrey

Earl of Surrey ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of England, der erstmals 1088 von Wilhelm dem Eroberer an William de Warenne verliehen wurde. Der Titel wird häufig auch als Earl of Warenne bezeichnet, womöglich, weil William nur wenig Ländereien in Surrey hatte.

Der Titel ging dann auf Williams Sohn und später auf seinen Enkel über, die ebenfalls William hießen. Danach trugen ihn die Ehemänner von Isabelle, Tochter des 3. Earls of Surrey. Ihr erster Ehemann war Wilhelm von Blois, Sohn von König Stephan, zweiter Ehemann war Hamelin de Warenne, ein Halbbruder von König Heinrich II. Hamelin nahm den Namen Warenne an und sein Sohn, Enkel und Ururenkel trugen später den Titel.

Nachdem die männliche Linie der Warennes 1347 zum zweiten Mal ausgestorben war, ging der Titel auf Richard Fitzalan, 10. Earl of Arundel über. Dieser war eine Neffe des letzten Earls mit den Namen Warenne. Ihm folgte sein Sohn Richard nach, dem der Titel 1397 vor seiner Hinrichtung 1397 aberkannt wurde.

Anschließend wurde Thomas Holland, ein Enkel des 10. Earl of Arundel zum Herzog von Surrey ernannt. Er trug diesen Titel jedoch nur zwei Jahre, bis König Heinrich IV. ihm diesen entzog und Richard Fitzalans Sohn Thomas zum Earl of Surrey ernannte. Dieser starb 1415 ohne männliche Erben und der Titel verfiel. Der Titel des Earl of Arundel ging auf seinen Cousin über, der kein Nachkomme der Warennes war.

Der Titel wurde sodann 1483 an Thomas Howard verliehen, der später 2. Duke of Norfolk wurde. Seit dem wird der Titel Earl of Surrey von der Familie Howard gehalten, wenngleich mit einigen Unterbrechungen, in denen der Titel entzogen, dann aber zurückgegeben wurde. Der 4. Earl dieser zweiten Verleihung erbte auch den Titel des Earl of Arundel. Seit dem 6. Earl ist der Earl of Surrey ein dem Duke of Norfolk untergeordneter Titel.
