Earl of Suffolk

Earl of Suffolk und Duke of Suffolk sind erbliche britische Adelstitel in der Peerage of England, benannt nach der Grafschaft Suffolk in England. Der Titel Earl of Suffolk wird nunmehr von der Familie Howard getragen. Mehrmals wurde der Earl of Suffolk auch zum Duke of Suffolk erhoben.

Der Familiensitz ist Charlton House bei Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

Verleihungen

Die erste Verleihung außerhalb der königlichen Familie erfolgte 1337 an Robert de Ufford. Der Titel erlosch jedoch 1382 mit dem Tode von dessen Sohn.

Schon drei Jahre später wurde der Titel an Michael de la Pole verliehen. Der Titel wurde in den folgenden Jahren mehrfach ab- und wieder zuerkannt, jedoch stets in der Familie. 1444 wurde der vierte Earl zum Marquess und vier Jahre später zum Herzog erhoben. Der dritte Herzog verzichtete zunächst 1493 auf die Herzogswürde, 11 Jahre später wurde ihm auch die Earlswürde endgültig aberkannt.

1514 wurde der Titel Duke of Suffolk an Charles Brandon verliehen. Er erlosch 1551 mit dem Tode des dritten Herzogs.

Die dritte Verleihung des Herzogtitels erfolgte 1551 an Henry Grey, 3. Marquess of Dorset. Er erlosch jedoch schon drei Jahre später wieder, als Henry Grey hingerichtet wurde.

Die letzte Verleihung, nunmehr jedoch der Earlswürde, erfolgte 1603 an Thomas Howard, 1. Baron Howard de Walden.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Als nachgeordnete Titel führt der Earl of Suffolk heute die Titel Earl of Berkshire (verliehen 1626)[1], Viscount Andover (verliehen 1622) und Baron Howard of Charlton (verliehen 1622), alle in der Peerage of England. 1689 ging die Baronie Howard de Walden (verliehen 1597, ebenfalls Peerage of England) an die Familie Howard.

1706 wurde Henry Howard, 6. Earl of Suffolk, zusätzlich der Titel Earl of Bindon verliehen. Er erlosch 1722 mit dem Tode seines Sohnes[2].
