Earl of Sandwich ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of England, benannt nach der Stadt Sandwich in England, der von der Familie Montague getragen wird.

Der Stammsitz der Familie liegt bei Mapperton in Dorset.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde 1660 von Karl II. geschaffen und Sir Edward Montagu verliehen. Dieser war ein berühmter Admiral und Politiker, der insbesondere die Stuart-Restauration betrieb, nachdem er Oliver Cromwell bis zu dessen Tode unterstützt hatte.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Der Earl of Sandwich trägt außerdem noch die nachgeordneten Titel Viscount Hinchingbrooke und Baron Mountagu of St Neots. Auch diese Titel wurden 1660 geschaffen und gehören zur Peerage of England.

Der vom ältesten Sohn des Earls benutzte Höflichkeitstitel ist Viscount Hinchingbrooke.

Sonstiges

Das Sandwich genannte belegte Brot ist nach dem vierten Earl benannt. Angeblich ließ er sich belegte Brote machen, damit er seine Bridge- oder Cribbage-Partien nicht wegen so etwas Unwichtigem wie Mahlzeiten unterbrechen musste.
