Earl of Mornington ist ein irischer erblicher Adelstitel in der Peerage of Ireland, der von der Familie Wellesley getragen wird und heute ein nachgeordneter Titel des jeweiligen Duke of Wellington ist.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1760 für Garret Wellesley, 2. Baron Mornington, den Vater des berühmten Arthur Wellesley, 1. Duke of Wellington, geschaffen. Dieser war ein bedeutender Philanthrop seiner Zeit.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Die nachgeordneten Titel des Earls of Mornington sind Viscount Wellesley, of Dangan Castle (geschaffen 1760) und Baron Mornington (geschaffen 1746), beide in der Peerage of Ireland.

Weitere Titel

Dem zweite Earl, Richard Wellesley, wurde 1797 der Titel Baron Wellesley in der Peerage of Great Britain verliehen, der einen Sitz im House of Lords zur Folge hatte. 1799 wurde er zum Marquess Wellesley in der Peerage of Ireland erhoben. Beide Titel erloschen, als er 1842 ohne lebenden männlichen Abkömmling starb.

Der dritte Earl, William Wellesley-Pole, wurde 1821 zum Baron Maryborough im irischen Adel erhoben. Diese Titel erlosch mit dem Tod seines Enkels, des fünften Earls, 1863.

Nach dem Tod des 5. Earls fiel der Titel an die Dukes of Wellington, die ihn bis heute tragen. Er wird heute als Höflichkeitstitel vom ältesten Sohn des Titelerben geführt.
