Earl of Buckingham

Earl of Buckingham war ein britischer erblicher Adelstitel, benannt nach der Stadt Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, der mehrfach in der Peerage of England verliehen wurde.

Verleihungen

Die erste Verleihung erfolgte 1097 an Walter Giffard, erlosch aber wieder mit dem Tod des zweiten Earls.

Aus dem Jahr 1164 stammt wohl die zweite Verleihung, nunmehr an Richard de Clare ("Strongbow"), der 1176 ohne Nachkommen starb.

1377 wurde Thomas of Woodstock, der jüngste Sohn des Königs Eduard III. zum Earl of Buckingham ernannt; 1385 folgt die Erhebung zum Herzog von Gloucester. Durch seine Hinrichtung 1397 verfiel das Herzogtum, während die Earlswürde an seinen Sohn Humphrey Plantagenet vererbt wurde, der aber zwei Jahre später ebenfalls ohne Nachkommen starb.

Eine vierte Verleihung erfolgte 1618 zugunsten von Mary Villiers, diesmal jedoch lediglich auf Lebenszeit und ohne Möglichkeit, den Titel zu vererben.

Ihr Sohn George Villiers, 1. Viscount Villiers, wurde ebenfalls mit dem Titel beliehen und wenige Jahre später (1623) zum Duke of Buckingham erhoben. Mit dem Tod des zweiten Herzogs 1687 erloschen beide Titel.

Hochstapler (1983)

  • 1983 nahm Charles Stopford, ein ehemaliger US-Soldat, den Namen Lord Buckingham an. In den Medien wurde fälschlich berichtet, er habe sich den Titel eines Earl of Buckingham angemasst. Der Betrug wurde 2006 entdeckt[1].
