Eadred

Edred oder Eadred (* um 925; † 23. November 955), König von England (946–955) war der jüngste Sohn König Eduards des Älteren und folgte seinem Bruder Edmund I. auf den englischen Thron. Gekrönt wurde er in Kingston upon Thames am 16. August 946 (drei Monate nach dem Tod Edmunds).

Wie bei vielen frühen englischen Herrschern, liegt auch bei Edred manches über seine Regierung im Dunkeln. Während man allen seinen Vorgängern Gesetze zuschreiben kann, fehlt jeder Hinweis darauf, dass Edred sich um die Rechtsprechung kümmerte.

Durch die Vertreibung der dänischen Fürsten Olaf III. Skötkonung und Erik Blutaxt (954) und der Absetzung des dänenfreundlichen Erzbischofs Wulfstan I. von York, schloss Edred die endgültige Eroberung Northumbrias ab, was den größten Erfolg seiner Regierungszeit darstellt.

König Edred starb unverheiratet und ohne Nachkommen zu hinterlassen am 23. November 955 in Frome (Somerset).

Der Name der kleinsten schottischen Whisky-Destillerie Edradour geht auf König Edred zurück, da im Gaelischen „Edred dobhar“ soviel bedeutet wie „Der Fluss von König Edred“.
