Die Dysthymie (fachspr.: Dysthymia) ist die chronische Form einer depressiven Verstimmung, die nicht alle diagnostischen Kriterien für das Vollbild der Depression erfüllt. Die Symptome müssen mindestens zwei Jahre lang anhalten. Ein Patient, der an Dysthymie leidet, kann zwischendurch zusätzlich noch depressive Episoden haben – in diesem Fall spricht man im englischen Sprachraum von einer „double depression“.

Wechseln Perioden leicht getrübter (dysthymischer) Stimmung regelmäßig mit Perioden leicht euphorischer Stimmung, so liegt eine Zyklothymia vor, eine leichte Variante der bipolaren Störung.
