Die Hl. Dymphna (auch Dimpna, Dymfna, Dimfna oder Dympna) ist die Patronin der psychisch Kranken.

Leben

Die Hl. Dymphna ist vermutlich im 7. Jahrhundert in Irland oder England geboren und in Geel bei Antwerpen gestorben. Laut ihrer im 13. Jahrhundert verfassten Vita floh sie mit dem Priester Gerebernus nach Belgien, um ihrem Vater, der sie nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter heiraten wollte, zu entkommen. Nach der Entdeckung ihres Aufenthaltsortes enthauptete sie dieser zusammen mit dem Priester Gerebernus.

Ikonographie

Dymphna wird als Königstochter, als Eremitin mit dem Teufel, mit Gerebernus oder beim Martyrium dargestellt. Sie ist unter anderem auf dem Altarbild der zum Krankenhaus Steinhof gehörenden Kirche am Steinhof von Otto Wagner in Wien abgebildet. In dieser Darstellung trägt sie ein Schwert als Symbol für ihre Enthauptung.
