Ein Donut [ˈdoʊnʌt], auch Doughnut (engl. dough, „Teig“, nut, „Nuss“ oder auch „Schraubenmutter“), ist ein handtellergroßer US-amerikanischer/kanadischer Krapfen aus Rührteig und seltener aus Hefeteig (auch Schmalzgebäckkringel genannt).

Die Form ist entweder ein abgeflachter Ballen, der häufig Marmelade oder eine andere süße Füllung enthält, oder ein Torus, also ein dicker Teigring ähnlich wie ein Bagel; diese zweite Form ist häufiger.

Donuts werden aus einem speziellen Rührteig geformt und in Fett − in der Regel Sojaöl − ausgebacken. Der Rührteig wird mit verschiedensten Glasuren wie z. B. Schokoladenkuvertüre oder bunter Glasur (Fett-Zucker-Mischung) überzogen.

In Europa waren Donuts lange Zeit relativ unbekannt. In den letzten Jahren sind sie hingegen immer öfter anzutreffen. In den USA sind sie fest in der Alltagskultur verankert. Verschiedene Schnellrestaurantketten haben sich dort auf Donuts spezialisiert, z. B. Dunkin' Donuts, Tim Hortons, Winchell's Donuts, Country Style, Batriks Donuts und Krispy Kreme. Krispy Kreme und Dunkin' Donuts haben sich mittlerweile auch in Europa (Großbritannien, Spanien und Deutschland) etabliert.

Einer der größten Donutproduzenten der USA ist die Firma Dawn Food, diese ist seit 1997 auch in Europa vertreten.
