Advance Australia Fair (englisch „Schreite voran, schönes, glückliches Australien“) ist seit 1984 die australische Nationalhymne.

Geschichte

Das Lied wurde im 19. Jahrhundert von Peter Dodds McCormick komponiert und 1878 uraufgeführt.

Bevor Australien eine eigene Nationalhymne hatte, wurde God Save the Queen als Nationalhymne verwendet. Im Zuge der Loslösung vom Großbritannien wurde 1973 ein Australian National Anthem Quest durchgeführt, in dem eine völlig neue Hymne komponiert und getextet werden sollte. Keines der vorgelegten Ergebnisse vermochte allerdings zu überzeugen, so dass schließlich die bereits vorher als inoffizielle Nationalhymnen verwendeten Lieder Waltzing Matilda, Song of Australia und zwei Strophen aus Advance Australia Fair vorgeschlagen wurden.

Bei einem Referendum sprach sich 1977 eine Mehrheit von 43,6 % für „Advance Australia fair“ aus, während auf die anderen Möglichkeiten nur je 28,5 % („Waltzing Matilda“), 18,7 % („God Save the Queen“) und 9,2 % („Song of Australia“) entfielen. Daher wurde „Advance Australia fair“ am 19. April 1984 als neue Nationalhymne angenommen. Königshymne ist weiterhin God Save the Queen.

Wegen einer zu starken Anlehnung an das Mutterland Großbritannien und wegen angeblich frauendiskriminierender Passagen wurde der Text jedoch in Teilen geändert.
