Đakovica (kyrillisch Ђаковица; albanisch Gjakovë/Gjakova) ist eine Industriestadt im Südwesten der Republik Kosovo an der Grenze zu Albanien. Đakovica ist Hauptsitz der gleichnamigen Großgemeinde Gjakovë/Đakovica.

Geschichte

1867 begann der türkische Gegenschlag bei Luma und der Malsia Gjakova.

1910 marschierten die Türken in Peć und Đakovica ein.

Bevölkerung

Nach Schätzungen der UNMIK leben derzeit etwa 90.000 Menschen in der Stadt Đakovica, in der gleichnamigen Großgemeinde insgesamt 150.000. Im Kosovokrieg flüchteten beinahe alle in der Großgemeinde lebenden Serben. Vor dem Krieg lebten rund 3000 Serben in der Region, heute sind es nur noch sechs. Außerdem leben Angehörige anderer ethnischer Minderheiten in Đakovica, darunter derzeit etwa sechzig bosniakische Familien. Roma, Goranen, Aschkali und Kosovo-Ägypter sind mit insgesamt über 7000 Angehörigen vertreten.

Die Stadt leidet unter hoher Arbeitslosigkeit, die nach Schätzungen bis zu 80 % beträgt.

Krieg

Im Kosovokrieg wurde die Altstadt komplett zerstört; die Moschee, das ehemalige Polizeiquartier und eine Basilika sind noch heute Ruinen.

Der Militärflugplatz in Gjakova soll zum Zivilflughafen ausgebaut werden.
