Distributor

Ein Distributor ist ein Verteiler, Großhändler, Filmverleiher. Die Distribution (von lateinisch distribuere = verteilen, aufteilen) beschreibt im Allgemeinen die Verteilung von Gütern von der Produktionsstätte bis zum Konsumenten.

Ein Distributor kann eine einzelne Person sein, meistens aber ein Zusammenschluss von mehreren Personen, wie z. B. als Unternehmen oder freie Gemeinschaft, zur Verteilung von verschiedenen Gütern.

Im Zuge des zunehmenden Vertriebs über das Internet verlieren Großhändler in einigen Branchen an Bedeutung, weil Einzelhändler (z. B. Softwareunternehmen) oder gar Endkunden teilweise direkt bei den Herstellern einkaufen.

Beim Export von größeren Warenmengen über Zollgrenzen hinweg lohnt es sich, einen Distributor im Zielland einzusetzen. So können viele Sendungen gesammelt zu einem Distributor z. B. in die USA geschickt werden und gemeinsam verzollt werden. Im Zielland wird der Container geöffnet und einem Frachtführer (z. B. UPS oder Fedex) übergeben. Dieser Frachtführer verteilt die einzelnen Sendungen im Zielland.

Im Bereich IT hört man den Begriff „Distributor“ neben der klassischen Bedeutung als Großhändler (hier von Hardware und Software) auch besonders häufig in einem anderen Zusammenhang mit Linux: dort wird die Zusammenstellung verschiedener Computerprogramme zusammen mit dem Linux-Kernel zu einem umfangreichen Betriebssystem als Linux-Distribution bezeichnet.
