Als Eisenschwamm (Eisenluppe, Schwammeisen, oft auch DRI für "direct reduced iron") versteht man ein festes Produkt der Direktreduktion. Die Reduktion des Eisenerzes (Hämatit in Pelletform) mit den Gasen Kohlenstoffmonoxid und Wasserstoff ergibt ein schwammartiges Produkt mit großem Porenvolumen. Eisenschwamm wird im Elektrolichtbogenofen weiterverarbeitet. Aufgrund seiner Reinheit lassen sich qualitativ höchstwertige Stahlsorten herstellen. Wegen seiner großen Oberfläche ist Eisenschwamm sehr reaktiv. Um ihn vor Oxidation zu schützen, wird er häufig mit Kohlenstoffpartikeln bestäubt.

Vor Erfindung des Hochofens konnte Eisen wegen der geringen Ofentemperaturen nur als Eisenschwamm hergestellt werden. Dieser enthielt zwar wenig Kohlenstoff, jedoch noch mindestens 3 % Schlacke und war daher extrem spröde. Um daraus einen verwertbaren Werkstoff zu erzeugen, musste der Eisenschwamm in einem aufwändigen Prozess oberhalb der Schmelztemperatur der Schlacke geschmiedet werden, um die flüssige Schlacke herauszupressen.
