Als Deësis wird die mittelalterliche Darstellung des am jüngsten Tag zu Gericht sitzenden Jesus bezeichnet. Jesus zur Seite sitzen Maria auf der linken und Johannes der Täufer auf der rechten Seite. Außerhalb der Ostkirche, also in der Kunst der katholischen Kirche, kann Johannes der Evangelist an die Stelle des Täufers treten. Maria und Johannes leisten Fürbitte für die zu richtenden Seelen. Die Deësis bildet damit das Kernstück der Ikonostase.

Beschränkt sich die Darstellung der Fürbitte auf diese drei zentralen Figuren, spricht man von einer kleinen Deësis. In einer großen Deësis wird die Kerngruppe von weiteren Heiligen und Engeln in bittender Haltung flankiert.

Ursprünglich in Byzanz entstanden, sind Deësis-Darstellungen seit dem 11. Jahrhundert bekannt und verbreitet.

Bekannte Werke sind z. B. das Deësis-Mosaik in der Hagia Sophia oder das Fresko des Theophanes Strelitzas in Karyes auf Athos.
