Adelieland ist ein zu den Französischen Süd- und Antarktisgebieten gehörender Teil der Antarktis mit einer Fläche von 432.000 km2. Die französischen Ansprüche sind jedoch international durch den auch von Frankreich unterzeichneten Antarktisvertrag ausgesetzt.

Geografie

Das Gebiet liegt zwischen dem 136. und dem 142. Längengrad und ist an der Küste nur an wenigen Stellen eisfrei.

Geschichte

Adelieland wurde am 20. Januar 1840 durch den Franzosen Jules Dumont d’Urville entdeckt, der es nach seiner Frau Adélie benannte.

Geologie

Nach dem Adelieland wurde der 1912 dort gefundene Meteorit "Adelie Land" benannt.

Fauna

Nach ihrem Siedlungsort wurden die Adelie-Pinguine benannt.

Bevölkerung

Adelieland ist abgesehen von der Besatzung der Forschungsstation Dumont d'Urville unbewohnt (Winterbesatzung 30, Sommer 120).
