Debulking

Als neoadjuvante Therapie wird in der Onkologie eine Therapie, z. B. Chemotherapie oder Strahlentherapie bezeichnet, die zur Schädigung des Tumors bzw. der Reduktion der Tumormasse („Debulking“) vor einem geplanten operativen Eingriff dient. Sie wird häufig durchgeführt, wenn ein Tumor primär nicht operabel ist. Durch die neoadjuvante Therapie kann eine Tumorverkleinerung erreicht werden mit dem Erfolg, dass eine weitere operative Therapie möglich werden kann. Diese ist häufig der einzige Weg zur kurativen Therapie eines bösartigen Tumors.

Eine Chemo- oder Strahlentherapie, die nach einem operativen Eingriff zur Entfernung des Tumors durchgeführt wird, bezeichnet man als adjuvante Therapie.
