Act of Union 1800

Der Act of Union 1800 war die Vereinigung des Königreiches Großbritannien (durch die Act of Union 1707 eine Vereinigung der Königreiche England und Schottland) mit dem Königreich Irland zum Vereinigten Königreich von Großbritannien und Irland auf den 1. Januar 1801.

Der Vertrag erlaubte es Irland, 100 der 658 Abgeordneten in das britische Parlament im Palace of Westminster zu entsenden, das waren weniger Abgeordnete, als der irischen Bevölkerung proportional zustanden, da zu diesem Zeitpunkt etwa ein Drittel der Gesamtbevölkerung Irlands und des Vereinigten Königreiches Großbritannien aus Irland kamen. Teil des Vertrages war auch die Katholikenemanzipation, obwohl sie nicht im Text des Act eingeschlossen war, da größere Proteste der irischen protestantischen Opposition befürchtet wurden. Wegen des Glaubens Königs George III. wurden allerdings keine weiteren Schritte diesbezüglich unternommen, da es seinen bei der Krönung abgelegten Eid verletzt hätte.

Die Flagge nach der Vereinigung von Großbritannien und Irland blieb im Großen und Ganzen die Flagge des Königreichs Großbritannien, schon seit dem 17. Jahrhundert bekannt als Union Jack: Das geradlinige rote Kreuz (Georgskreuz) repräsentiert England, der blaue Hintergrund mit dem weißen Andreaskreuz repräsentiert Schottland, dazu kam jetzt – etwas verschmälert – das diagonale rote Kreuz (St. Patrick's Cross), es repräsentiert Irland.
