Kildare (irisch Cill Dara, dt. „Eichenkirche“) ist eine Grafschaft (county) im Osten der Republik Irland. In West-Kildare liegt die gleichnamige Stadt Kildare.

Geografie

Die Landschaft ist abgesehen vom vulkanischen Bereich des Chair of Kildare, überwiegend Flachland, das in seinem Aussehen von der letzten Eiszeit geprägt worden ist.

Geschichte

Die Gegend wurde 1171 von den Anglonormannen erobert; im Jahr 1297 wurde das County errichtet. Im County befindet sich das Armeelager Curragh, in dem zahlreiche irische Nationalisten und während des Zweiten Weltkriegs ausländische Flugzeugbesatzungen interniert wurden.

Wirtschaft

Die Landwirtschaft besteht in der Hauptsache aus Rinderzucht sowie Pferde- und Schafhaltung; der Ackerbau umfasst den Anbau von Gerste, Weizen und Zuckerrüben. Es gibt Textil- und Papierindustrie sowie Landmaschinenbau. Im Westen wird zum Eigenverbrauch noch Torf abgebaut. Der Nordosten der Grafschaft gehört zum wirtschaftlichen Einzugsgebiet von Dublin.

Politik

Kildare entsendet sieben Abgeordnete in das irische Parlament (Dáil Éireann). Die Grafschaft ist in zwei Wahlkreise aufgeteilt. Bei der Wahl im Mai 2002 wurden folgende Abgeordnete für Kildare North bestimmt: Bernard Durkan (Fine Gael), Charlie McCreevy (Fianna Fáil), Catherine Murphy (parteilos) und Emmet Stagg (Labour Party); für Kildare South: Séan Ó Fearghail (Fianna Fáil), Séan Power (Fianna Fáil) und Jack Wall (Labour Party).
