Als Controller (vom englischen für „Regler“), Steuergerät oder Steuereinheit werden im Bereich Computer-Hardware elektronische Einheiten bezeichnet, die verschiedenste Vorgänge steuern oder regeln. Bestehen diese Einheiten nur aus einem integrierten Schaltkreis, handelt es sich meist um sogenannte Mikrocontroller.

Controller haben im Computer eine Vielzahl von Aufgaben: Sie übernehmen die Steuerung von Unterbrechungsanforderungen (IRQs), der Tastatureingabe oder der Festplatte (siehe z. B. ST506) und regeln hierbei den Datentransfer. Was in Bezug auf Festplattenanbindung im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch Controller genannt wird (z. B. IDE-Controller), ist heutzutage allerdings meist ein Host-Bus-Adapter. Die Controller von Festplatten sind nämlich seit der Verbreitung von Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) in den 1980er Jahren in wesentlichen Teilen in der Festplatte selbst untergebracht; für SCSI-Festplatten galt das ohnehin von Anfang an.
