Clypeus

Der Clypeus, auch Stirnplatte genannt, ist Teil des Kopfschildes bei Insekten und liegt mittig direkt über dem Labrum. Oft ist die Stirnplatte durch Furchen deutlich von den anderen Teilen des Kopfschildes abgesetzt.

In vielen Insektengruppen gibt es artspezifisch unterschiedliche Ausbildungen der Stirnplatte, etwa in Bezug auf Färbung und Zeichnung, Behaarung, Punktierung, Mikrostruktur, Wölbung oder Sonderbildungen wie vorstehenden Zähnen oder Leisten. Bei Faltenwespen beispielsweise dient die unterschiedliche Zeichnung der Stirnplatte (in Form von Punkten, Anker etc.) neben anderen Merkmalen zur Bestimmung der verschiedenen Arten.

Auch bei den Spinnen wird der meist schmale Abschnitt zwischen dem vorderen Augenpaar und dem Rand des Carapax als Clypeus bezeichnet.

In der Kunst gibt es die Bezeichnung Clipeus für ein schildartiges Rundbild wie für den Tondo oder gar ein Bild auf einem runden Schild, wo beispielsweise ein Porträt dargestellt ist. Bekannt ist das schon seit der Antike.
