Clockwise – Recht so, Mr. Stimpson oder Clockwise – In letzter Sekunde ist eine Komödie über einen überkorrekten Schuldirektor einer englischen „Staatlichen Gesamtschule“, der auf der Fahrt zu einer Jahresversammlung der Schuldirektoren etliche Missgeschicke erlebt.

Handlung

Die Handlung zeigt die Fahrt des Schuldirektors Brian Stimpson von seiner Gesamtschule nach Norwich zu einem Treffen von Schuldirektoren. Er hat als erster Direktor einer staatlichen Gesamtschule die Ehre, Vorsitzender des besonders elitären Clubs von Schuldirektoren zu werden, in dem hauptsächlich Direktoren berühmter Privatschulen vertreten sind.

Die Komik des Filmes basiert zum Teil darauf, dass im Englischen das Wort right sowohl richtig als auch rechts bedeutet, und büßt somit einen Teil des Witzes durch die deutsche Übersetzung ein. Dieses Problem wurde in der Synchronisation dadurch gelöst, dass Mr. Stimpson zu jeder Gelegenheit die Floskel „recht so“ verwendet, was häufig von anderen Personen als „rechts“ bzw. „nach rechts“ missverstanden wird.

Durch diese Missverständnisse gerät sein sorgsam geordnetes Leben allmählich komplett aus den Fugen. Je mehr sich der Schuldirektor bemüht, seine Fehler zu korrigieren und pünktlich anzukommen, desto mehr Missgeschicke passieren ihm, da er nicht in der Lage ist, unter Stress die richtigen Entscheidungen zu treffen. Seine Überbetonung von Seriosität und Ordnung wird entlarvt als heuchlerische Selbstgefälligkeit, hinter der sich Unfähigkeit, Inkonsequenz und Disziplinlosigkeit verbergen.

Kritiken

Das Lexikon des internationalen Films schrieb, der Film sei eine „vergnügliche Unterhaltung mit einer Fülle von skurrilen Nebenfiguren und -handlungen, die das Interesse an der etwas dünnen Geschichte aufrechterhält“.[1]

Auszeichnungen

John Cleese gewann im Jahr 1987 für seine Darstellung den Evening Standard British Film Award (Peter Sellers Award for Comedy).

Wissenswertes

Stimpsons Schule wurde nach Thomas Tompion benannt, einem berühmten Uhrmacher.

Die Reise Stimpsons wird eingerahmt von dem Choral He who would valiant be: Vor seiner Abreise lässt er ihn von seinen Schülern singen, nach seinem Auftritt auf der "Headmasters Conference" singen ihn die versammelten Schulleiter. Der Text geht auf John Bunyan zurück (The Pilgrim's Progress 1684; jetzige Fassung von Percy Dearmer 1906); er beschreibt den tapferen Kampf des Pilgers gegen alle Widrigkeiten:

He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster,

Let him in constancy follow the Master.

His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.
