Women in Jazz

Women in Jazz ist der Name mehrerer Konzertreihen, bei denen ausschließlich Jazzmusikerinnen auftreten. Das Festival findet jährlich in Halle (Saale) statt.

Konzeption des Festivals

Der 20. März 2005 gilt als Gründungstag für das Festival Women in Jazz. Nach einer Vorbereitungszeit von elf Monaten startete am 2. Februar 2006 das 1. dreitägige Festival in Halle. Beweggrund für dieses Jazzfestival ist, dass die Jazzszene nach der Jahrtausendwende auch durch große Künstlerinnen geprägt worden ist. Dabei sind Jazzmusikerinnen in den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten zunehmend in den Mittelpunkt des Jazz-Interesses gerückt. Zu der dominierenden Stellung der Frauen im Vokaljazz kommt zusätzlich noch ihre Emanzipation im Instrumentaljazz. Dieser Entwicklung trägt das Festival inhaltlich Rechnung. Dabei möchten die Veranstalter des Festivals durch Jazzmusikerinnen bestimmte Jazzprojekte auf dem Festival präsentieren. Natürlich wird aber auch die Zusammenarbeit mit männlichen Jazzmusikern auf dem Festival präsentiert. Das künstlerische Angebot des Festivals ist international. Dabei wird der zeitgenössische Jazz in seiner multikulturellen Vielfalt präsentiert. Künstlerinnen aus allen Kontinenten (bis auf Ausnahme von Australien) waren bereits Gäste des Festivals.

Das Festival wird durch drei bis vier Konzertabende geprägt, die im Opernhaus Halle und in der Konzerthalle Ulrichskirche stattfinden. Darüber hinaus gibt es ein umfängliches Rahmenprogramm mit Ausstellungen, Jazzclub- und Sessionveranstaltungen, Cityjazz und einem Konzertangebot mit regionalen Künstlern.

Das Festival nimmt Bezug auf ein amerikanisches Festival mit ähnlicher Intention.
