Terry Southern

Terry Southern (* 1. Mai 1924 in Alvarado, Texas; † 29. Oktober 1995 in Morningside Heights, Manhattan, New York City) war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Essayist, Drehbuchautor und Hochschullehrer.

Biographie

Southern war ein einflussreicher Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautor und Teil der Pariser literarischen Bewegung der Nachkriegszeit und der Beat Generation in Greenwich Village, New York City. Er lebte in London, dem Zentrum der Swinging Sixties und war ein Wegbereiter für die Weiterentwicklung des US-amerikanischen Films in den 1970ern. Während der 1980er schrieb er für die US-amerikanische Comedy-Show Saturday Night Live und lehrte das Verfassen von Drehbüchern an einigen New Yorker Universitäten.

Terry Southerns schwarzhumoriger und oftmals absurder Stil beeinflusste und beeindruckte Generationen von Autoren, Lesern, Regisseuren und Kinobesuchern. Der Schriftsteller Tom Wolfe nennt ihn einen Wegbereiter des New Journalism. In diesem Bezug wird häufig Southerns Publikation Twirling at Ole Miss aus dem Jahr 1962 genannt. Der US-Amerikaner schrieb unter anderem die Drehbücher für Dr. Seltsam oder: Wie ich lernte, die Bombe zu lieben, The Loved One, Cincinnati Kid oder Easy Rider. Seine Arbeit bei Easy Rider half in den 1970er-Jahren eine eigenständige Bewegung gegenüber Hollywood zu gründen.

Terry Southern ist auf dem Cover des Beatles-Album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band zu finden. Er steht in der zweiten Reihe.
