Pantone- und RGB-Hexadezimal-System beschreiben beide die Farbe als ein warmes Grau. Die verschiedenen Töne von taupe sind in der Mode, im Innenausbau, Industriedesign und der Grafik weit verbreitet. Taupe ist jedoch ein vager Begriff und steht für fast jede grau-braune, bräunlich-graue Nuance und warmen Grauton. Professionelle Verwender wie Designer und Künstler sind dadurch häufig uneins, was „taupe“ bedeutet. Eine einheitliche, allgemein anerkannte Definition gibt es nicht.

Begriffsgeschichte

Das Wort „Taupe“ leitet sich vom lateinischen Namen für den Europäischen Maulwurf (Talpa europaea) ab. Ursprünglich bezog sich die Farbe nur auf die durchschnittliche Farbe des Französischen Maulwurfs.[1] Wie bei den Farben Rosa und Lavendel wurde der Begriff (im Fall von Taupe Anfang der 1940er Jahre) um eine breite Palette von unterschiedlichen Schattierungen erweitert. Offenbar bietet die Fellfarbe des Maulwurfs eine breite Palette von Nuancen von grau, braun bis zu violett.
