Suicide by cop

Suicide by cop (dt. etwa Suizid durch Polizisten) bezeichnet eine Methode des Suizids mit dem Ziel, das Leben durch tödliche Schüsse zumeist eines Polizisten (oder aber auch durch andere bewaffnete Personen) zu beenden.[1]

Hintergrund

Grundlage ist der Finale Rettungsschuss, der gezielte tödliche Einsatz von Schusswaffen im Dienst von Polizisten, wobei die Idee dieser Art des Suizids bis zur Zeit des Römischen Reichs zurückgeht.[2] Während in Deutschland über diese Art des Suizids selten berichtet wird, gehen erste Berichterstattungen in den US-amerikanischen Medien in die 1980er-Jahre zurück. Seit dieser Zeit hat sich auch der Ausdruck suicide by cop gegenüber anderen möglichen Bezeichnungen wie etwa suicide by police oder death by cop durchgesetzt.[3] Eine Untersuchung eines Mitarbeiters des Delta Police Department ergab, dass bei ca. 50 Prozent der 843 untersuchten Fälle einer Schießerei das Motiv des suicide by cop zu Grunde lag.[4] Ähnlich wie die Lokführer beim Schienensuizid werden Polizeibeamte vom Suizidenten für ihr Vorhaben benutzt, diese leiden in der Folge oftmals an posttraumatischen Symptomen.

Suicide by cop im Film

Der suicide by cop gehört zur Handlung verschiedener, zumeist US-amerikanischer, Spielfilme. So wird u. a. in dem Thriller Der Einsatz, in dem Al Pacino in einer ausweglosen Situation seine Pistole ohne Munition auf mehrere Polizisten richtet und daraufhin, um einer Verhaftung zu entgehen, wie gewünscht erschossen wird sowie in Falling Down – Ein ganz normaler Tag und New Police Story darauf zurückgegriffen. In dem Film Gran Torino wird Clint Eastwood, wie gewünscht, von einer Jugendbande erschossen, als er etwas aus der Tasche holt, was diese für eine Waffe hielten.

Auch werden solche Ereignisse, im Vergleich zu Europa vermehrt, in US-Medien durch Liveübertragungen per Fernsehen oder Online übertragen, ähnlich der Geiselnahme von Gladbeck.[5][6]
