Out of band ist ein englischer Begriff, der das Konzept beschreibt, dass z. B. Authentisierungsinformationen auf einem zweiten Kanal übermittelt werden sollen.

Dies basiert auf der Annahme, dass ein Angreifer nicht alle Kommunikationskanäle von Sender und Empfänger einer vertraulichen Meldung gleichzeitig belauschen kann oder falls doch, es zumindest schwieriger wird, das Belauschte zu einem Angriff zusammenzufügen.

Ein Extrembeispiel des Konzeptes ist z. B., wenn ein zufallsgenerierter Link mittels E-Mail übermittelt wird und ein kurzer (z. B. 5-stelliger) Zugangs-Code einer Brieftaube übergeben wird.
