Patrice Motsepe

Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe (* 28. Januar 1962 in Johannesburg) ist ein südafrikanischer Milliardär und in leitenden Positionen bei verschiedenen südafrikanischen Bergbauunternehmen[1]. Daneben ist er auch Präsident der Mamelodi Sundowns.[2]

Leben

Die Eltern Motsepes wohnten vor seiner Geburt in den Townships von Johannesburg. Seine Mutter stammt aus dem königlichen Tswana-Stamm, sein Vater war ein Gegner der Arpartheidsregierung in Südafrika und besaß unter anderem ein Lebensmittelgeschäft.[3]

Patrice Motsepe studierte Jura an der Universität von Swaziland und als einer von wenigen Schwarzen an der Witwatersrand-Universität in Johannesburg. Im Jahre 1988 begann er bei Bowman Gilfillan Inc., einer der größten und erfolgreichsten südafrikanischen Anwaltskanzleien, zu arbeiten. 1993 stieg er zum ersten farbigem Partner der Kanzlei auf.

1994 gründete Motsepe das Bergbauunternehmen Future Mining. Drei Jahre später folgte ARMgold (African Rainbow Minerals), welches seit 2002 an der Johannesburger Börse gelistet ist. Das Unternehmen ARMgold fusionierte 2003 mit der Harmony Gold Mining Company Ltd.. Weitere Übernahmen und Zusammenschlüsse folgten. Heute sitzt Motsepe in den Aufsichtsräten und Vorständen mehrerer wichtiger südafrikanischer Unternehmen.[4][5]

2002 wurde er von den Vorstandsvorsitzenden der 100 größten südafrikanischen Unternehmen zum South Africa’s Business Leader of the Year gewählt. Im gleichen Jahr gewann er den Ernst & Young Best Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Seit 2003 ist er auch Besitzer und Präsident des südafrikanischen Fußballclubs Mamelodi Sundowns.

Privates

Patrice Motsepe ist verheiratet und hat drei Söhne. Er gilt als der erste schwarze Milliardär.[6] und als einer der reichsten Männer Südafrikas.
