Miami Gardens ist eine City im Norden von Miami und gehört zum Miami-Dade County, Florida. Die Stadt ist nach dem Miami Gardens Drive benannt, einer ihrer zentralen Hauptverkehrsstraßen. An das Verkehrsnetz ist Miami Gardens durch die Florida East Coast Railway und die South Florida Tri-Rail sowie die Interstate 95, den Palmetto Expressway (Florida State Road 826) und die Florida Turnpike angeschlossen.

Geschichte und Demographie

Am 13. Mai 2003 wurden die CDPs (Census-designated places) Andover, Bunche Park, Carol City, Lake Lucerne, Norwood, Opa-locka North und Scott Lake nach vorangegangener Abstimmung unter der Bevölkerung zur City of Miami Gardens zusammengelegt.

Bei ihrer Gründung schätzte das United States Census Bureau die Einwohnerzahl auf 100.842. Im Jahr 2004 betrug die Einwohnerzahl nach Angaben der Stadt 105.887, damit ist Miami Gardens nach Miami und Hialeah die drittgrößte Stadt in Miami-Dade County. Zahlen von 2007 schätzen die Bevölkerung mittlerweile auf 108.862.[1]

Die Stadt verfügt über 29.262 Haushalte (im Schnitt 3,39 Personen pro Haushalt) und die Bevölkerung ist zu 47 % männlich und zu 53 % weiblich.[2]

Miami Gardens ist die größte Stadt in Florida, welche zur Mehrheit aus afroamerikanischen Einwohnern besteht. Größten Anteil haben Afroamerikaner an der Einwohnerzahl mit 79 %, gefolgt von Hispanics mit 16 %.[3]

Einrichtungen

In der Stadt befindet sich das Dolphin Stadium, das Heimstadion des NFL-Franchise Miami Dolphins und des MLB-Franchise Florida Marlins. Außerdem ist es Spielort der Miami Hurricanes, dem College-Sportteam der University of Miami. Mit dem Calder Race Track, einer Pferderennbahn, befindet sich eine weitere große Sportstätte in der Stadt.

Die Schulen Miami Norland High School, Miami Carol City High School sowie die St. Thomas University und Florida Memorial University befinden sich im Stadtgebiet von Miami Gardens. Darüber hinaus verfügt Miami Gardens über 17 Elementary Schools, vier Middle Schools und die North Dade Regional Library.[4][5]
