Margaret Preston (Margaret Rose McPherson) (* 1875 in Adelaide, Australien; † 28. Mai 1963 in Mosman, Sydney) war eine bekannte australische Künstlerin.

Leben

Sie war die älteste Tochter von David McPherson, einem Marine-Ingenieur, und Prudance Cleverton (geb. Lyle). Bis 1885 lebte die Familie in Sydney. 1888 begann die Künstlerin eine Ausbildung bei Künstler William Lister Lister und im Jahr 1893 begann sie ein Studium an der National Gallery School of Design in Melbourne.

1894 zog sie nach Adelaide und 1896 kehrte sie nach Melbourne zurück. Dort studierte sie an der National Gallery School of Painting bei Bernard Hall. Im Jahr 1898 studierte sie noch in Adeleide an der School of Design Malerei und technische Künste bei Harry Gill. Dank der Erbschaft ihre Mutter eröffnete sie 1903 ein Atelier und reiste nach Europa. Dort nahm sie am Unterricht an der Münchner Kunstschule für Frauen teil. Anschließend ging sie nach Paris wo sie im Salon de la Société des Artistes Français angenommen wurde. Seit dieser Zeit entwickelte sie einer Art der Kunst, die sehr dekorativ oder abstrakt war und die auf den europäischen Malstilen und den japanischen Ukiyo-e basierte.

Im Jahr 1920 heiratete sie William Preston. In dieser Zeit arbeitete sie an einem Konzept zur nationalen Kunst und wurde Kommentatorin in kulturellen Gestaltungsfragen und zur modernen Kunst Australiens. In den neunziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts war als Malerin wegen ihrer außergewöhnlichen modernen Werke, in denen sie die Aboriginemotive einführte, sehr erfolgreich.
