Residenz des Prinzen von Luwu in Palopo (um 1920)

Luwu ist eine Region (Kabupaten) der Provinz Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesien mit einer Fläche von 3.098,97 km². Hauptort ist Palopo. Die Bevölkerung sind mehrheitlich Bugis.

Geschichte

Der Name geht auf das Königreich Luwu (auch Luwuq oder Wareq) zurück, dem ältesten Königreich in Sulawesi Selatan. Der niederländische Gouverneur Braam Morris von Makassar datierte 1889 die Blütezeit des Reiches auf das zehnte bis vierzehnte Jahrhundert. Als seine Quelle diente wahrscheinlich die La Galigo, ein episches Gedicht in einer archaischen Form der Buginesischen Sprache.[1]
