Ismar Schorsch

Ismar Schorsch (* 3. November 1935 in Hannover) war der sechste Kanzler des Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in New York, Präsident des Leo Baeck Instituts und ist der Rabbi-Herman Abramovitz-Professor für Jüdische Geschichte.

Leben

Ismar wurde in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus 1935 in Hannover geboren als Sohn des Rabbis Emil Schorsch. Während der sogenannten „Reichskristallnacht“ verhaftete man seinen Vater, der nach Deportation und Freilassung aus dem KZ Buchenwald mit seiner Familie nach England floh und 1940 in die USA auswanderte.

1957 absolvierte Ismar Schorsch das Ursinus College in Collegeville, Montgomery County, im US-Bundesstaat Pennsylvania, ein liberales Kunst-College.

1962 wurde Schorsch durch das JTS ordiniert. Seine Magister machte er am JTS und an der Columbia University und erhielt von dieser einen Award in Jüdischer Geschichte.

19 Jahre, von 1987 bis 2006, war Ismael Schorsch Chancellor der JTS; nach dem Ausscheiden aus dem Berufsleben wurde Arnold Eisen sein Nachfolger.

Ismar und seine Ehefrau Sally Schorsch haben drei erwachsene Kinder und elf Enkel.
