Inverell ist eine Stadt am mit knapp 10.000 Einwohnern am Macintyre River im Norden des australischen Bundesstaat New South Wales. Sie liegt 620 Kilometer nördlich von Sydney und 430 Kilometer südwestlich von Brisbane am Gwydir Highway. Die Stadt ist der Verwaltungssitz des gleichnamigen Verwaltungsgebiets (LGA) Inverell Shire.

Im Jahr 1836 gründete Alexander Campbell die 200 km² große Inverell Station am Macintyre River. Der Name des Anwesens ist gälischen Ursprungs und bedeutet soviel wie Treffpunkt der Schwäne, von Inver, der Treffpunkt, und Ell Schwan.[2] Die Stadt wurde im Jahr 1858 ausgewiesen und erhielt 1859 sein erstes Postamt.[3]

Inverell ist eine fruchtbare, landwirtschaftlich geprägte Region. Hauptsächlich wird hier Getreide und Mais angebaut. Daneben gib es verschiedene Minen in denen Zinn, Saphire, Zirkon und Diamanten gefördert werden.
