Henry Somerset, 1. Duke of Beaufort, KG, PC (* 1629; † 21. Januar 1699/1700) war ein englischer Peer. Von 1646 bis zum 3. April 1667 war er als Lord Herbert bekannt, dann folgte er seinem Vater als Marquess of Worcester.

Am 2. Dezember 1682 wurde Somerset das neu geschaffene Dukedom von König Karl II. verliehen. Es war eine Anerkennung seine Dienste für den König: "having been eminently serviceable for the king since his most happy restoration, in consideration thereof and of his most noble descent from King Edward III by John de Beaufort, eldest son of John of Gaunt by Catherine Swynford".

Somerset war bereits 1672 in den Hosenbandorden aufgenommen worden, am 22. April 1679 wurde er Privy Counsellor. Außerdem führte er das Amt des Lord President of Wales.

Später verweigerte Somerset König William III. den Treueeid.

Familie

Henry Somerset heiratete am 17. August 1657 Mary Capell, die Tochter von Arthur Capell, 1. Baron Capell of Hadham, eine Schwester von Arthur Capell, 1. Earl of Essex, und Witwe von Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp. Sie hatten gemeinsam drei Söhne und vier Töchter:

  • Henry Somerset, Lord Herbert, starb als Kind;
  • Charles Somerset, Marquess of Worcester (Dezember 1660 - 13. Juli 1698), Militär und Politiker;
  • Lord Arthur Somerset.
  • Lady Mary Somerset, Lady of the Bedchamber, verheiratet in zweiter Ehe mit James Butler, 2. Duke of Ormonde, (1 Sohn, 2 Töchter)
  • Lady Henrietta Somerset, verheiratet in erster Ehe mit Henry Horatio O'Brien, Lord O'Brien (1 Sohn (Henry O'Brien, 8. Earl of Thomond), 3 Töchter), in zweiter Ehe mit Henry Howard, 6. Earl of Suffolk;
  • Lady Anne Somerset, verheiratet mit Thomas Coventry, 2. Earl of Coventry, (1 Sohn)
  • die vierte Tochter starb vermutlich jung.

Somersets Sohn Charles starb, bevor er die Titel seines Vaters erben konnte; die Würde ging daher auf dessen Sohn Henry über.
