Die HMS Triumph wurde als Libertad 1902 für die chilenische Kriegsmarine auf Kiel gelegt, am 3. Dezember 1903 von Großbritannien gekauft und am 7. Dezember 1903 in Triumph umbenannt. Sie kam 1904 in der Home Fleet, 1905-1909 bei der Channel Fleet, 1909-1912 bei der Mediterranean Fleet, 1912/13 erneut bei der Home Fleet zum Einsatz. Seit 1913 war sie der China Station zugeteilt, lag allerdings in Hongkong in Reserve. Sie beteiligte sich 1914 am Feldzug gegen die deutsche Kolonie in Tsingtau (China). Anschließend nahm sie am Kampf gegen türkische Truppen während der Dardanellen-Kampagne 1915-16 teil.

Versenkung

Am 25. Mai 1915 befand sich das Schiff vor Gaba Tepe und beschoß türkische Stellung. Das Schiff befand sich auf Gefechtsstation mit geschlossenen Schotten und ausgebrachten Torpedonetzen.

Gegen 12.30 wurde an Steuerbord in ca. 400m Entfernung vom Ausguck ein Periskop entdeckt. Dies gehörte zu SM U 21 unter dem Kommando von Otto Hersing und war gerade aus Cattaro angekommen.[1]. Sofort wurde das Feuer auf das U-Boot eröffnet. U-21 hatte jedoch schon einen Torpedo abgefeuert, der problemlos durch die Netzsperre schneiden konnte. Es gab eine große Explosion und HMS Triumph hatte sogleich 10 Grad Schlagseite nach Steuerbord. Nach 5 Minuten erhöhte sich die Krängung auf 30 Grad. Weitere 10 Minuten später kenterte das Schiff durch und blieb noch 30min kieloben liegen, bevor es im 50m tiefen Wasser versank. Der Zerstörer HMS Chelmer (1904) konnte zuvor noch einen Großteil der Besatzung retten. Jedoch fanden 3 Offiziere und 75 Matrosen den Tod.
