Facepalm (englisch face = ‚Gesicht‘ und englisch palm = ‚Handfläche‘) ist ein Begriff des Internetjargons. Hierbei wird die physische Geste beschrieben, in der eine Hand Teile des Gesichts bedeckt. Damit sollen verschiedene Gefühle (Scham, Verlegenheit, Skepsis, Frustration, Ekel oder Unglück) ausgedrückt werden. Es entspricht der Redewendung „die Hände vors Gesicht schlagen“. [1][2]

Internetkultur

Populär wurde der Facepalm als Internet-Phänomen basierend auf einem Bild von Star-Trek-Captain Jean-Luc Picard, auf dem er diese Geste ausführt.[3] [4] In Internet-Diskussionen wird gelegentlich ein Bild verwendet, auf dem eine Person den Facepalm ausführt, um auszudrücken, dass sie die Aussage, auf die sie damit Bezug nehmen will, für lächerlich, falsch oder dumm hält.

Insbesondere in Foren und Chats wird das Wort zwischen Sternchen: *facepalm* (Inflektiv) oder als Emoticon die Zeichenfolge m( geschrieben, um auszudrücken, dass der Autor diese Geste ausführt.
