Der Football Association of Ireland Challenge Cup, kurz FAI Cup (nach dem offiziellen Sponsoren auch „FAI Ford Cup“), ist seit 1922 der größte Pokalwettbewerb im irischen Fußball. Er wird jährlich vom Football Association of Ireland (FAI) veranstaltet und ist nach der Irischen Meisterschaft der zweitwichtigste Titel im nationalen Vereinsfußball.

Neben den Vereinen aus der Republik Irland nimmt mit dem Derry City auch eine Mannschaft aus dem zum Vereinigten Königreich gehörenden Nordirland am Spielbetrieb teil. Der Sieger des FAI Cups wird nach dem K.-o.-System ermittelt.

Aktueller Titelträger sind die Sligo Rovers. Rekordsieger ist der Shamrock Rovers mit 24 Titeln.

Spielbetrieb

Der FAI Cup richtet sich seit 2003 wie in Skandinavien nach dem Kalenderjahr. Dadurch kam es während der Übergangszeit 2002 zu zwei Titelgewinnern - ende April gewann Dundalk den FAI Cup, Derry City holte sich im November die Trophäe.

Neben den Vereinen aus der FAI National League of Ireland, spielen auch mehrere Vereine aus der Leinster Senior League, Munster Senior League und Ulster Senior League. Alle Vereine aus der FAI National League of Ireland greifen erst ab der zweiten Runde im Wettbewerb ein. Die Spielpaarungen werden ausgelost und im K.-o.-System ausgetragen. Das Finale wird zum Ende des Jahres ausgetragen (entweder Ende November oder Anfang Dezember).

Der Gewinner des FAI Cup qualifiziert sich für die Teilnahme am UEFA Europa League; wenn der Pokalsieger auch Meister ist, tritt der unterlegene Finalist im UEFA Europa League an. Außerdem nehmen das Siegerteam oder, wenn dieses über die Liga qualifiziert ist, der Verlierer des Endspiels am gesamtirischen Setanta Sports Cup teil.

Geschichte

Der FAI Cup wurde von 1922 bis 1937 als der Free State Cup, nach dem der Irische Freistaat gegründet wurde, genannt.

In den 1970er konnte Drogheda United bei zwei Finalteilnahmen nie einen Sieg erringen. 2005 stand Drogheda United wieder im Finale - diesmal gegen Cork City. Die Tore von Gavin Whelan (sein Vater, Paul Whelan, führte Bohemians 1992 zum Sieg des FAI Cup und sein Großvater, Sir Ronnie Whelan, gewann zweimal mit St Patrick’s Athletic den Titel) und Declan O'Brien verhalfen zum ersten FAI Cup-Titel für den Drogheda United.

Shelbourne, Bohemian FC und Derry City sind die einzige Vereine, die sowohl den Irish Cup als auch den FAI Cup gewonnen haben. Shelbourne und Bohemian gewannen den Irish Cup vor der Teilung Irlands, während Derry City bis 1972 in der nordirischen Liga blieb und 1985 in der League of Ireland aufgenommen wurde.

Athlone Town A.FC (1924), Dundalk FC (1958) und Shamrock Rovers (1968) sind die einzigen Vereine, die den FAI Cup - und somit jedes Spiel - ohne Gegentor gewonnen haben.

Spielstätten

Seit der Gründung des FAI Cup werden die Endspiele grundsätzlich immer in Dublin ausgetragen. Die meisten Endspiele fanden im Dalymount Park statt (1922 - 1989 & 1996 - 1998, sowie 2000). Aufgrund des damaligen maroden Zustands des Dalymount Park wechselten sich seit den 1990er die Spielstätten. Von 1990 bis 1996, sowie von 2003 bis 2006, wurden die Endspiele im Lansdowne Road ausgetragen. Im Tolka Park wurden die Endspiele von 1999 bis 2002 ausgetragen. Die Endspiele 2007 und 2008 wurden in der RDS Arena gespielt und 2009 im Tallaght Stadium. 2010 fand das Endspiel im Aviva Stadium statt.
